Calvillo update

Injured quarterback Anthony Calvillo has a bruised sternum, according to head coach Marc Trestman, who addressed the media Friday morning at Olympic Stadium.

Although Calvillo was expected to be released from Montreal General Hospital Friday morning, Trestman said he would continue to remain there, for precautionary reasons, but had suffered no structural damage.

Trestman was going to visit Calvillo, after going to the dentist, and before flying home to Raleigh, N.C. for the bye week in the schedule. Players won’t practice until next Friday, and the Als don’t play again until Sept. 3, at home, against British Columbia.

Calvillo was injured with 4:52 remaining in the second quarter of Thursday’s game, against Winnipeg, after being sacked by Odell Willis. Calvillo, who turns 38 on Monday, has sustained more hits and damage than usual this season, and was already playing with a dislocated index finger on his throwing hand.

He passed for 164 yards and two touchdowns against the Blue Bombers before departing. Montreal, leading 24-0 at the time, held on for a 32-17 victory, improving its record to 6-2.

Calvillo was replaced by Chris Leak, who led the Als to two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

  1. Here’s wishing Calvillo a speedy and full recovery.

  2. This is not good … I wish him a speedy recovery :(

I have heard about these type of injury ( i.e bruised ribs and broken ). in his case they are saying contusion / dislocation. I am sure he won’t be able to do anything before a month and then the rehab starts.

It looks like AC is gone for season .

  3. A dislocated rib? Wasn’t Eve a dislocated rib? :-)

@Dr. jrmtl: The infinite source of wisdom known as The Public Internet tells me that recovery can be quite speedy, if treatment (manipulation of the dislocated rib) is promptly received. Me thinks AC will benefit greatly from the bye week and return to the glory that is the “Larks”.

  4. In order to protect AC we need more running plays, it looked like our running game got a boost under Leak/Whitaker, with a bye and then BC at home I would rest AC until the mid September game against the Cats.

  5. Where are you guys getting this? It clearly says in the article that AC has a bruised sternum. Not a dislocation or a contusion.
So base your prognosis on that.

  6. My aplogies…a contusion is a bruise.
The sternum is a piece of bone and cartilage which protects the heart and lungs. In servere cases the bruised sternum results in a bruised lung which can get pretty serious and sometimes fatal.
A typical case would be, before the invention of air bags and seat belts, the driver of a car getting rammed into the steering wheel in a car accident.
With AC at 38… he’s out a month, dependant on how deep that bruise is.

I was wondering about the injury, recovery times etc:

“Symptoms of a sternum that has been injured will be swelling, bruising, tenderness and pain when moving, breathing, laughing, coughing as well as any other activity that requires movement of the chest. In short, the individual will likely be in near continuous pain for up to four weeks as the sternum heals. Since breathing is a necessity, the area will always be called into action although many people resort to taking short breaths in attempts to alleviate the pain. As severe symptoms can create other disorders and even infections due to shallow breathing, a doctor should always be consulted when any injury to the sternum has occurred.”

Sorry if it’s inappropriate…posting vids of Calvillo’s replacement on a blog about his injury.
There hasn’t been any other so far during the by week…vacation I guess.

The first is Adrian McPherson taking the team on his back, running for a TD in that ill-fated Winnipeg game…late 2009.

The second is just in case you’d forgotten he can pass the ball….oh yah!

  9. Nostre, nice work. There’s a lot to ponder there. Of course AM will have to learn to finish his reads faster so he’s not stuck in a scramble situation. IMHO there should be more plays designed for him to roll out and option a pass/run too. From the other threads it appears that the ball is in Leak’s hands for the immediate future, but in the long run I would love to see a tandem alternating QB situation operating at blitz tempo.
